I did not know what to expect at first, as “Face to Face” does not mean any hands on shooting experience, rather a very deep, detailed talk about the principles of cinematography and how we may apply it film in general. To my surprise he introduced me to a whole different world and a “new” approach to the concept of videography. He is not trying to convince you to do the same stile of films he makes. He only makes you understand the basic principles of film by systematically analysing and examine all the required steps from pre-production to post production as well as the idea of being able to concept what you want to do with a given situation.
I have been filming for over twenty years now for the BBC but moved into Wedding Films about three years ago. When I met Alejandro earlier this year he taught me more than I ever knew there was to learn about audio visual language and the art of cinematography. Alejandro a talented and inspiration filmmaker but also a patient, encouraging and amazing teacher with the ability to share his knowledge with anyone wanting to learn from him. Since I met Alejandro in May my work has changed. I have found a better way to make films and tell stories. I knew I had it in me all along but Alejandro gave me the confidence to actually follow it through.
Alejandro has a very unique and refreshing approach to his craft. He doesn't chase the latest trends when it comes to gear (drones, gimbals, etc.) but rather relies on a single camera and filmed with a singular point of view. It really is amazing how much more substance you can capture when you are not bogged down with so much equipment. We spoke at length regarding the application of classic cinema techniques that he learned while studying at film school and how those ideas can be applied to wedding filmmaking. He was kind enough to review a few pieces of my work and came prepared with tips and suggestions on how I could expand my craft. I thoroughly enjoyed our conversation and found him to be very encouraging and generous with his time.
Itʼs amazing to see what Alejandro is doing with following real cinema rules into his films. This short film is like to drink a nice red wine. You feel unconfortable, curios, amused by watching really simple events mixed with a great pacing. The cinematography is really simple but never casual. Every clip and every moment is studied with meticulos attention. His way to film is one man one camera one point of view. Every footage is steady and fix from a tripod work. Seems all easy and light, but the study that there is behind his films is from a genius.
I recently attended one of his seminars and it completely blew me away. His concept of how to shoot and edit a wedding film with just one camera, Yes! one camera is unbelievable and his storytelling skills would match any Hollywood film director. His entire though process for the wedding day and the way he captures the unique event is so special. I sat through most of the seminar blown away by what one person and one camera can do! I appreciate my progression to the next level won't happen aver night but Alejandro has given me a new found desire and direction to take my business. Alejandro is a master of his craft and to top it all off is a true gentleman. I feel honoured to have been able to share a day with him and truly blessed that he was willing to share his thoughts and ideas with me.
In an industry where so many people are doing the same or very similar work, I believe the best way to be different is finding your own particular style. Alejandro's mentoring session was incredibly helpful for this. Instead of telling me how to do or not to do things, Alejandro talked to me about the language of filmmaking, the audio-visual language, and how to apply it to what I am doing or want to do. He analyzed some of my work, he made me re-think some of my editing choices, we discussed the structure of one of my wedding films, and he was open to answer all of my questions. Honestly, this online session has been one of the best investments I've done in a very long time, and I am sure it will have a positive impact on my business and career.
