WORKSHOP vs. SEMINARIO
 

¿Por qué yo llamo a mis presentaciones “Seminario” y no “Workshop”?
Por lo general, un Workshop cuenta con la participación de un especialista que se encarga de dar una charla y de impartir ciertos conocimientos teóricos. Luego, bajo su supervisión, los participantes realizan trabajos en equipo o desarrollan algún tipo de actividad que les permita llevar esa teoría a la práctica. Pero cuando dicho especialista muestra su modo de trabajar frente a los participantes, generalmente cristaliza en ellos un “modus operandi”, del que luego será difícil abstraerse. En un Seminario, en cambio, las nociones se exponen solo como teoría. Será el participante quien luego deba procesarlas y aplicarlas a su propio modo.
 
Personalmente considero que un Seminario es el mejor modo de impartir nociones, sin influenciar prematuramente al receptor de las mismas. Cuando enseño el Lenguaje Audiovisual a mis colegas, pongo a disposición un vasto “alfabeto” con infinitas posibilidades de combinaciones. Para que luego cada videógrafo construya y perfeccione su propio discurso, en lugar de copiar el mio.

“This wedding film is incredible. First off, the very first shot? Genius. Secondly, I am in love with how the filmmakers made a conscious choice to wait until almost halfway through to really reveal the bride and groom. The first several shots are extreme close-ups on details, and boy did that pull me in and make the payoff worth it. And tying it all back together by the end. Seriously awesome shooting, too. Doesn’t hurt that the couple is gorgeous.”

Due pellegrini iniziano un lungo viaggio per una destinazione lontana. Dopo diversi giorni di cammino arrivano a un bivio e scoprono che il cartello che indicava la direzione era caduto a terra. Uno di loro si siede sul ciglio della strada, abbattuto, annunciando la fine del viaggio. L’altro viaggiatore, tuttavia, solleva il cartello e orienta il nome della loro città di provenienza in quella direzione, dicendo:
 
“-Vedi? Non vi è alcun motivo per disperare. Per sapere dove stiamo andando, non ci resta che vedere da dove siamo venuti.”
 
Esattamente tre anni fa ho avuto la fortuna di essere il Master in Cinematografia di Matrimoni per il primo Campus dell’Associazione Nazionale Videografi d’Italia (ANV), svoltosi a Corciano, Perugia. Oggi, quella stessa fortuna mi mette nella giuria del Creative Wedding Contest organizzato da ANV. Dal buio dell’ultima fila della sala di proiezione con Luigia Pansera e Jeff Wood -gli altri membri della giuria- ho ammirato, riso, mi sono emozionato e ho applaudito il lavoro dei miei colleghi italiani. Ho riflettuto a lungo sullo stato di avanzamento di ANV. La qualità e la professionalità delle storie sfilato davanti ai miei occhi durante la gara e mi hanno confermato che il cammino è in ascesa e i videografi hanno preso della Associazione l’eccellenza ricevuta in questi tre anni di percorso insieme. Sono in grado di vedere le cose nella giusta prospettiva; io posso alzare il cartello caduto, orientare una estremità all’origine -anno 2013- e vedere dove porta l’altra parte del cartello: la via da seguire, ma soprattutto, capire dove ci troviamo oggi.

La presenza di Jeff è stata per me la riunione con un vecchio compagno di viaggio, con cui ho condiviso alcuni matrimoni in meravigliose destinazioni come l’Inghilterra, Monaco, Ibiza e l’India, e con il quale condivido anche la passione per il cinema della nostra generazione. Nel suo ruolo di Master, sono rimasto piacevolmente sorpreso dalla sua umiltà, disponibilità ed energia. Sono sicuro che gli abbiamo lasciato dentro di se anche una traccia di calore latino.
 
La presentazione di Giacomo Fabbrocino sul Montaggio è stato un respiro di aria fresca stimolante, portando con sé il riferimento al linguaggio audiovisivo di cui ha bisogno il nostro lavoro per rompere finalmente il formato tradizionale.
 
E’ stato notevole il lavoro di Demetrio Caracciolo, presidente di ANV, mentore e motore dell’associazione, a cui ha toccato affrontare i molteplici aspetti di organizzazione del Campus, 25 ore al giorno. Tante volte si è trovato di fronte a sfide impossibili, ma è andato avanti con determinazione ed ottimismo. Nonostante tutto, come Presidente di ANV, durante i giorni del Campus è stato il padre generoso che lascia il “figlio” da solo scomparendo dietro attività minori, rimanendo sempre il primo ad arrivare e l’ultimo ad andarsene.
 
 

 
 
Grazie al Direttivo ANV che diede la possibilità di presenziare il primo Campus in qualità di Master, e ha rinnovato la sua fiducia nominandomi membro della Giuria in quest’ultimo. Grazie a tutti i soci dai quali ricevo sempre rispetto ed affetto. Grazie a Demetrio Caracciolo il quale rinnova la fiducia nei mie confronti tutti i giorni. Grazie all’ Italia per avermi permesso di riscoprire le mie radici e chiudere quel cerchio aperto tanti anni fa dai miei nonni.

EMPTY TIMELINE SYNDROME
 
Editing a wedding video means finding a story … and tell it. To tell a Story, you need to know a LANGUAGE, and articulate it by using a certain style: yours. All this takes time and reflection. It’s hard work.
Thomas Edison said that people are willing to do anything in order to avoid the hard work of thinking. When we Videographers face the hard work of telling a Story, we usually go out to buy equipment instead. Buy … to fill a gap. But beware: a timeline can be “filled” with a single “click”. Emptiness is not so much the absence of clips, but the lack of CONTENT. At this point I want to be clear: It’s not about declaring war on technology, but to understand that the stories we have to tell are not related to tecnology. Technology will be always welcomed, but only when we know what to do with it.
 
Meanwhile, our empty timeline awaits us.

Some time ago had an interesting conversation about Wedding Cinematography. It was a lesson in common sense that still makes me think. My interlocutor was saying: “… When I watch a Wedding Film, I am not interested in watching the make up process of the bride, or when the groom puts his jacket or polishes his shoes. Instead I want to hear the voice of the bride’s dad, see grandma walking with difficulty, see picture frames with family photos. I’m tired of always seeing the same anonymous things in all wedding films. Who invented this fashion? it’s as if you guys work for a stock Image company”.
